Sunday Reunion Picnic in the works

There is a group of our classmates working diligently to put together a picnic on the Sunday (August 17) after the scheduled Sarasota reunion. This would allow anyone who can't afford or refuse to go to Sarasota to gather for a reunion event at the school.

The plan is to possibly have it at Tampa Catholic, so we can get a tour of the campus, have a small mass or prayer service in the new Chapel and eat in the Crusader Hall - our old library.

I think this is the best idea since sliced bread.

Stay tuned for more information.

TCHS Class of 87 Reunion

I had seen this site before but lost the link until just now. Our predecessors from the Tampa Catholic class of 1987, have a great reunion website. It looks from the pictures that they had a fun time, but there are only 20 in the group shot for Saturday night. Even less people on Friday night and at the pool Saturday. I'm just wondering what happened? Why couldn't they pull in big numbers of classmates? I'm certainly not being critical and I would like to ask some of them to comment on this blog to offer ideas. Maybe someone will listen to their experience.

They held the reunion at the Sheraton Sand Key last summer. Not a bad location, but not downtown Tampa either. I'd be semi-happy with a reunion in Pinellas County.

Where is the perfect location for a high school reunion? What's the best case scenario for attendance. I mean, come on, it's been 20 years. Why is it so difficult to get everyone together at a reasonable location with reasonable prices? What would the class of 1987 do different?

I'm venting here because our reunion plans don't make sense. I truly hope a large group of our classmates attends the Sarasota reunion and has fun. I hope they post pictures of everyone having a blast and immortalizes the fact that they were right about their plans.

But just know that there is a group of us that wants to see everyone, we just can't/won't travel to Sarasota for a reunion that should be in Tampa. It's not convenient, its not cost effective and when some of us volunteered to help and offer a different idea, we were ignored.

Class of 87, tell us about your reunion please...

Correction to the reminder cards

Please note that the dinner dance date is a misprint, it is actually on August 16th, NOT in Mid September.

Wishful thinking on the printer's part...Sorry. Had to do it.

Reminder Postcards have been mailed

I hope the clique enjoys their private party 75 miles away from where the reunion should be held.

Why a Sarasota reunion won't work for some of us

I received this email from a classmate who just can't afford a trip to Sarasota for a reunion that should be in Tampa. I felt it was worth posting - anonymously. It's not negative, it's just the facts...

"My family and I are unable to go because of the dates and especially because of the location. My children start school on August 7 and it is simply too early in the year to pull them out for reunion weekend. We were going to leave them with a sitter (for a pretty penny) and just fly down for the weekend. However, with the reunion not being in Tampa, we wouldn't be able to stay with family and use their vehicles...When I sat down and added up the cost of 2 round trip tickets ($500), plus the hotel for 2 nights ($400?), plus a rental car ($100), plus the sitter for our children($250), we were already at $1,250 and hadn't even been given the cost of the actual event yet. I just can't justify that kind of expense for a shotgun weekend when our family of 5 could go on a NICE vacation together for that much. If the reunion were to be held in Tampa, it would be much more reasonable for us...coming from out of town. I know I'm preaching to the choir, and it's probably too late to do anything about it, but you've been so good about communicating updates I figured I owed an explanation to you of why I won't be there. I was really looking forward to seeing everyone, too."

Our 20th Reunion should be Local and Affordable

What kind of 20th high school reunion do you want?

Where do you want to go? What do you want to do?

How much would you want to pay for the weekend?

Do you want to see the Tampa Catholic Campus and maybe even a football game at the new stadium?

What matters to you?

I want to hear your comments. Some of us want to know what the collective group wants to do. So please, leave your comments below. You can do it anonymously or you can add your name. It doesn't matter to me, but the comments are moderated, so keep a professional tone.

I will tell you what I think right now. Like it or not.

I love Tampa Catholic High School. In 2000, when I heard local sports talk radio talking trash about the school, I went to the principal and offered my help. Whether he was right or wrong, good or bad, I was there to help the school's reputation. I wanted to fix the riff he had with the media. And I did what I could as a Public Relations professional. The black cloud is gone. That principal is gone. The football program is back to its glory and academics are a top priority with this current administration. The school is better now than it ever has been in many many ways.

I want you to see how great the school has become. I want you to see a football game in the new stadium. Take a tour of the new Science and Technology Building. Hold a mass in the new chapel. You won't recognize the campus anymore. It's 100% secure and gated. It's worth a visit.

I have tried to get our class officers to meet with the Alumni Office and several of us interested in the planning. But they won't reply to my emails. So I'm taking it public. They are planning to have the reunion at the Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota in late August. Jesuit's class of 88 is also planning their reunion there, as I am told.

Why in the world would we want to go to Sarasota for a reunion? How does that keep the school involved? It doesn't. And the majority of our classmates won't go. I didn't go to the tenth reunion because I was living in Atlanta, my son was only a few months old and there was no way possible that I could have afforded a weekend at the Don Cesar.

I'm not interested in the planning itself but I do think it should be local and affordable. I've heard about other classes having poor turnout because of high prices and long distance driving. Why make it so exclusive so that only 30 people show up? We have 160 or so classmates. Let's make it convenient for as many as possible to attend.

The TC alumni office is willing to help. They suggest having the reunion during Homecoming week. But I think the weekend of Sept. 5 is a pretty good compromise. There is a home football game that night we can set up of a before game party in Crusader Hall, which was our old library. We meet there, walk across the street, see the game, maybe get introduced to the crowd. Sounds like a cool evening to me.

The next day we have a family lunch get together, catered or at a restaurant, indoors or outdoors, whatever. Then a fancy party Saturday night for those who want to go.

My job is to keep finding lost classmates, drive them to the Facebook TC 88 reunion group and to get them to subscribe to this blog for new information. Whatever the reunion plans end up being, I want to keep people in the loop and get as many involved as possible.

Make your own decision of what you think our reunion should be and tell us.

Have You Been on the Tampa Catholic Campus Lately?

Tampa Catholic isn't the same old campus we remember.

  1. The chapel is gone. It's been replaced by the Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley Science & Technology center
  2. The technology center is also the media/library, so the old library is now Crusader Hall, a gathering room for staff, students or alum
  3. There is a new, smaller chapel just east of the South Building
  4. The entire campus is fenced and secure. No more strangers walking through campus
  5. They have a STADIUM, but you probably know that
  6. And of course, they have air conditioning. Those kids have no idea....

If you haven't found it already, we have a group set up on Facebook, the social networking site. It's not just for college kids anymore. With nearly 70 million users, it's by far the best place to network online and the group is a good place to start to connect with our classmates.

So join Facebook and search Groups for Tampa Catholic C/O '88 Reunion. It's not hard to find us. As of today we have 13 members.
